About QuillSquare
QuillSquare is a UK education technology company building practical ways to assess, understand and improve children’s writing.
Why I started QuillSquare
QuillSquare began with my own experience as a parent. While supporting my son through 11+ writing preparation, I saw how difficult it could be to give consistently useful feedback between lessons.
A score or a list of grammar mistakes was rarely enough. Good feedback meant understanding the task, recognising what was working, identifying what mattered most, and explaining the next improvement in a way a child could actually use.
That takes time and judgement. As a parent, it can be difficult to assess your child's writing objectively or know what to prioritise. Tutors bring that expertise, but have limited lesson time and substantial marking workloads.
I started building QuillSquare to make the work between lessons more useful: to make structured, age-appropriate feedback quicker to prepare and easier to act on, while keeping parents and tutors involved. The aim is to support professional judgement and give children a clearer next step.

What we're building
What began with writing feedback has grown into a platform for the work around it: repeat attempts, progress over time, tutor workflows and parent–tutor collaboration. The aim is a shared understanding of each learner’s strengths and priorities.
- Build on each attempt. Keep earlier work and feedback together so the next piece has a clear focus.
- Support tutor workflows. Bring tasks, submissions, review and feedback into one place.
- Connect parents and tutors. Help the adults supporting a learner follow the work and understand what to practise next.
